Let’s compare a hid lamp with a light output of 2,800 to 3,500 lumens for a 35 to 38 watt consumption to a halogen filament lamp of 700 to 2,100 lumens for 40 to 72 watts of power. Taking the minimums, a HID produces 2,800 lumens for 35 watts or 2,800/35 or 80 lumens/watt (l/w). The halogen has a ratio of 700 lumens / 40 watts or 17.5 l/w. Taking the maximums hids have 3500/38 or 92.1 l/w while a halogen uses 2,100 / 72 or 29.2 l/w. Comparing these ratios with themselves produce percentages in the low range of 80/17.5 or 457% more light per watt for hids while on the high range producing 92.1/29.2 or 315%. Thus, to produce the same output of 1600 lumens, a hid would only require 20 watts (low side) while a halogen will require 54.8 watts (high side). This is more that 250% energy savings. Thus, for alternative powered car systems, hids are definitely the preferred lighting option.
