The problem with modern internal combustion engines is that fuel is burned even when standing still in traffic. This uses fossil fuel in a useless process and releases unnecessary carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In most alternative powered cars, like electric or compressed air cars, this waste is eliminated by simply stopping the flow of power during traffic. However, compared to the energy contained in a tank of fossil fuels, the current implementations of electric or compressed air energy storage is very much lower. Thus, energy in alternative powered cars are at a premium compared to fossil fueled cars. Energy consumption of non-drive related systems must therefore be reduced to increase mileage per full tank per charge. This severely impacts night driving that requires all external lighting at full operation. Thus, using lamps with a high light output per watt of power is a desirable option. This is precisely what High Intensity Discharge, or hid, lamps are.

Let’s compare a hid lamp with a light output of 2,800 to 3,500 lumens for a 35 to 38 watt consumption to a halogen filament lamp of 700 to 2,100 lumens for 40 to 72 watts of power. Taking the minimums, a HID produces 2,800 lumens for 35 watts or 2,800/35 or 80 lumens/watt (l/w). The halogen has a ratio of 700 lumens / 40 watts or 17.5 l/w. Taking the maximums hids have 3500/38 or 92.1 l/w while a halogen uses 2,100 / 72 or 29.2 l/w. Comparing these ratios with themselves produce percentages in the low range of 80/17.5 or 457% more light per watt for hids while on the high range producing 92.1/29.2 or 315%. Thus, to produce the same output of 1600 lumens, a hid would only require 20 watts (low side) while a halogen will require 54.8 watts (high side). This is more that 250% energy savings. Thus, for alternative powered car systems, hids are definitely the preferred lighting option.
